Did you know that March 10th to March 16th 2019 is Sleep Awareness Week? Today’s blog post is about the importance of sleep apnea awareness.

Everyone should be Aware: Sleep Awareness Week & Sleep Apnea

March 10th – March 16th, 2019 is Sleep Awareness Week and World Sleep Awareness day is March 15th 2019.

In this post we examine the expanse of the effect an untreated individual with sleep apnea has, not just on one’s own health, but also on the family and other individuals within their community that come in contact with the untreated patient.

Harm to Self

It begins with the individual, the lack of restorative sleep from the frequent arousals caused by the apneic events results in excessive daytime sleepiness. The frequent arousals can result in a spikes in blood pressure eventually resulting in chronic hypertension. The apneic events can cause oxygen desaturation which can result in cognitive deficits.

Harm to Loved Ones

Next in line is the bedpartner who also experiences lack of restorative sleep due to concern over the pauses in breathing or the sound of loud snoring. Increased irritability from lack of sleep can result in conflict in the family. In extreme cases, this can tear a family apart.

Harm to Co-workers

Then we need to consider the effects to the co workers. A sleep deprived employee is less productive due to lack of focus, more prone to accidents and injuries. People with untreated sleep apnea have higher utilization of the healthcare system and increase healthcare costs.

Harm to Community

We must also realize the dangers put on an unsuspecting community and society as a whole, as sleepy drivers are more likely to have motor vehicle accidents and injure innocent people.

So, for sleep awareness week, take a minute and think how even unknowingly, sleep apnea can affect your life in some manner.

Sweet dreams,
